It is clear that the author loves the history of this period and had a lot of fun revisiting it with a witch and a vampire. Often a second book in a series is not as good as the first, but I thought this one was better. Harkness has a new take on vampires; she created a family for whom I felt a good deal of sympathy. The relationship between Diana and Matthew grows - with a little careful blood-sucking; a whole new look at intimacy!

Great book
Great book! If you thought "A Discovery of Witches" was great you are in for a treat! It is a delightful blend on history, whimsy and more!
As you read you can feel yourself being drawn into this world and how it might have actually been during that period in time. Deborah Harkness' gift of storytelling skillfully draws you into a world of vampires and witches. Who would have thought??
I actually enjoyed this book more than the first - and can hardly wait for the next in the trilogy! If you loved the first the second will knock your socks off!!
