All of Texas Was After Chacho
Based on the true life story of a Mexican who shot a sheriff because the sheriff could not understand Spanish that led to a massive manhunt which lasted for weeks involving official law enforcement, trackers, and even the army. Not only that but Chacho was a horse handler, and when he was cheated out of the pretty mare he had tamed it began a long war between him and Texas. Originally published as a Ballantine western original in 1974 this is one of the book which help put Elmer Kelton higher on the list of great writers. Courage, bravery, resourcefullness, and the ability to understand what it takes to surrender when the time finally comes is what this story is all about. Texas and Texas people, including the Mexicans, are things Elmer Kelton knew how to write about and convey to the reading public.
