DeMille is a wonderful story teller! Great read, especially if you're a Long Islander!

Trashy novel
I received this as an audio CD. I would not want anyone to listen to the foul language and trashy script in my presence. It is most embarassing.

The best in novel writing
The Gate House is one of those books that I just couldn't put down--I was reading it during the Super Bowl. It's well plotted, flows smoothly, and the characters jump out at you to the point that you can construct what they look like in your head.
DeMille uses a minimum of words, yet gets maximum mileage from them. His brief but full descriptions of a place and a time that doesn't exist anymore makes you believe you are there. His characters are multi-faceted: good, bad, and a mix of the two. Just the way real people are. There are several story lines (as in most good novels) that weave in and out of the main story to great effect. The final resolutions will both amaze and delight you.
