During an ancient battle, the book was destroyed - it's cards scattered far and wide. Horowitz, Najaran's master, gives her a dangerous mission - she must obtain information about the Black Cepters and their nefarious plans. If the Black Cepters rebuild the Culdcept, the arcane book of ages past will grant them unspeakable God-like powers! Najaran's mission takes her to Soron City, where a tournament of Cepters in about to take place. Accompanying Najaran is Goligan - a magical, talking staff. His main duty is keeping Naja out of trouble. Naja enters the tournament and encounters several Cepters, both good and evil. In particular, she does battle with Zeneth, a foul Black Cepter. Najaran goes on to win the tournament! Quite an accomplishment! The Lord of Soron invites her to his palace for a celebratory meal. However, all is not what it seems! The Lord of Soron has been killed, and the fiendish Black Cepter Depthera has long-since assumed his identity! Najaran suddenly finds herself in battle with Depthera, a giant insect-like creature, and Zeneth! Naja fights fiercely, defeating her foes...but they vow that she shall meet them again.
