It is not well known in the United Staes that women have played a large combat role in Russia. The Amazon Women were Russian, Russian women fought against Napolean, they fought in the Revolution and in the "Great Patriotic War". (Russians refer toWWII by that name.)
This book is about a machine gunner. Women have also served as fighter and bomber pilots, snipers, infantry and most combat roles you normally assume to be male only. As expected - women also serve in the traditional roles. When she could spare time from her machine gun - she serves as a nurse and evacuates wounded to medical facilities behind the lines.
There are many books published in Russia about the women who served and only a few in English. This appears to be the only one about a machine gunner.
I would recommend this book. It demonstrates that women can serve in combat as well as men do.
