The Trench by Steve Alten is another great novel and follows right in the footsteps of the first novel MEG. While this book certainly packs a wallop in the action category it left me wanting more. Yes, the shark is as awesome and menacing. Yes, the plot grabbed me right from the start and would not let go. However, I felt that the characters in this one were a little more over the top and outlandish. With that said, it is important to realize that the author may have intended this. Throughout the novel I felt myself rooting even more strongly for the good guys and absolutely despising the bad guys. If that was Altens intent by making the characters as "outlandish" as possible, than he certainly accomplished his goal. This book has a touch more sexual content and is a bit more graphic than the first; which only leads me to believe the old adage "less is more". While still good for youth reading, it is definitely more adult oriented. Overall, an excellent read.
