If you're interested in the early days of the space program, this is highly recommended as it was written by two of the original seven astronauts.

Interesting, but far from great.
Here's a book written by two of the original 7 astronauts. Not just any two, but the two men who ran the astronaut office. Between them, they decided who would be an astronaut, what they would specialize in once selected, what missions each astronaut would fly, and what each crewmember's role in each mission would be. Shepard and Slayton had all that knowledge and they put absolutely none of it in this book. I purchased it hoping to find out why Jim Lovell flew 3 missions before Alan Bean had a chance to fly his first one. None of that is in here. There's no mention of the criteria they used to select the crewmembers. That's the book I really expected here. Unfortunately, it doesn't exist.
Besides being a disappointing book, it's rather poorly written. There's way too much hyperbole in it for me. The over use of overexaggerations becomes rather annoying after a few pages. If you can get past them, there are some gems buried deep within the pages, but don't expect to find any gold there.

Stories Of Heroes By A Hero
Moonshot is a autobiography/history of
Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton, and the
Apollo Program. The best parts concern
Shepard's preserverance in getting back
to flight status, and becoming the only
Original 7 astronaut to walk on the moon.
And, the several crises that nearly derailed
Big Al from achieving his dream of walking
on the moon couldn't be found in a Hollywood
script! A highly enjoyable read!
