A new voices monograph publishes with the Graham Foundation. Some architects try to wow with kooky shapes and arcane theory. Not Charles Rose. You don't need a PhD in Frankfurt School philosophy to appreciate the work of this Massachusetts-based architect. His projects are simply beautiful. But as this, his first monograph, makes clear, simply beautiful work is not necessarily simple. Rose's architecture is characterized by warm, natural materials - particularly wood - that reflect his ecological sensitivity and attention to sustainability in building. The strength and apparent weight of these materials, however, belies a conspicuously dynamic architectural experience created by the movement of spaces, the integration of natural light into the fabric of his buildings, and a language of horizontal planes that extends a structure well beyond its boundaries and into the landscape. We're proud to add Charles Rose to the distinguished catalog of architects on our list who've been creating sophisticated, responsible, and regionally aware building, including Marlon Blackwell, Rick Joy, Miller Hull, and the Rural Studio. This book presents ten of Rose's award winning institutional, commercial, and residential buildings, including the distinguished Chilmark Residence in Chilmark, Massachusetts; the celebrated Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Largo, Florida; and the Paintrock Camp for underprivileged urban youth, in Hyattville, Wyoming. We think it's inspiring work, and we hope you share our vision.
