I read this book hoping to get an honest behind-the-scenes look into the family lifestyles and dynamics of Japan's Yakuza underworld. Whilst Yakuza Moon definatly gave some insight into the aforementioned, it focuses more on the protagonist/authors development from child to adult. I don't mind coming-of-age stories but i felt frustrated and annoyed at times throughout reading this book. Initially at the poor writing and then just at the character who seemed so naive it was difficult to empathize with her at times. The writing style is fairly simplistic and it couldn't be classed as a difficult novel by even the most challenged reader. This level of accessibility in addition to it's relatively edgy, brutal themes in a society that is all about presentation, are the only things I could see that might justify it's international best-seller success. I guess the feminine take on a previously male-dominated subject (Yakuza) also gives it sparkle.
This is definatly not the worst book I've read, but I certainly expected more... On the positive side: the full body irezumi Tendo sports on the cover is truly something to behold-
