Eighner begins with an entertaining and insightful scene illustrating an editor's typical day. Since editors choose which submissions are published, this realistic depiction will be very helpful to the beginner. The author also lists the essential tools a writer needs in order to succeed, as well as those issues the beginner often worries over without cause.
There are chapters on writing basics: "Learning to Write for Publication", "Techniques of Fiction", and "A Writer's Guide to Style". He addresses the topics of structure, dialogue, and revision, and also "The Erotic Scene".
