Information about women's health care is the theme of this book, bringing together psychologists and physicians to explore the psychosocial and behavioural factors most pertinent to women's health care. It aims to provide health care practitioners with interventions that encourage health promotion and disease prevention for women. "Psychosocial and Behavioural Factors in Women's Health" recognizes that the behavioural and social context in which women lead their lives must be taken into account for their effective treatment. This volume reviews specific social factors that disproportionately affect women, such as lower socio-economic status and the impact of domestic violence. Throughout, specific assessment techniques are outlined to help health care practitioners uncover those conditions that women often keep hidden (like domestic abuse, eating disorders, and alcoholism). The volume then describes life-style factors that affect women's health, such as eating behaviours, exercise patterns and occupational stress. Women's health across the life span is also discussed, followed by a review of the specific life-threatening and chronic conditions that affect women, including cardiovascular health, HIV infection, breast cancer and recurrent headaches.
