Mary Austin should be better known
A Woman of Genius is a finely written story that unfolds a picture of small town life, religion, the theater, and especially the place of women in the U.S. around the turn to the 20th century. Mary Austin knew herself to be a woman of genius, and she knew that genius is a gift to be acknowledged, worked for, and used wisely, but it is not a reason for personal pride, does not make those who possess it better than others. Any study of feminism should include this book, and also others by Ms. Austin, particularly Cactus Thorn. In other writings Mary Austin proves to be a careful historian, observant environmentalist, and good story teller. There are rhythms in her writings that are unique to her and her time, and anyone who loves to read should find her entertaining, informative and just plain fun.
