L'oeuvre est divis�e en quatre livres, qui traitent dans l'ordre: des cultures et des champs, de l'arboriculture et de la vigne, de l'�levage des troupeaux, et de l'apiculture. On peut s'apercevoir que Virgile passe sous silence des grands th�mes tels que les jardins et l'art botanique; il s'agit l� d'un oubli volontaire, l'auteur voulant privil�gier l'utile � l'agr�able. Par ce po�me didactique, r�dig� en hexam�tres dactyliques, Virgile s'est impos� comme un grand po�te latin. On lui a parfois reproch� le manque d'ordre; mais, si la m�thode n'est pas absolument rigoureuse, elle est suffisamment nette et claire (on ne peut pas exiger d'un po�me la m�me rigueur que d'un trait� r�gulier en prose).
