They shaped their course upon the theory that another election might improve their position and could not injure it. In both these estimates they would, beyond question, have been grievously disappointed. We took the position that the Government would not be forced. The constitutional authority to determine the date of a general election is the governor-general, acting upon the advice of hisresponsible ministers, and the Opposition found us prepared to meet them upon this ground and to fight the battle to a finish.
