Excerpt from Remarkable Apparitions, and Ghost-Stories: Or, Authentic Histories of Communications (Real or Imaginary); With the Unseen World; Containing, Also, Accounts of Spectral Warnings, Haunted Houses and Places, Extraordinary Prophecies, Aerial Visions, &C Some years ago, having occasion to be at Chelmsford, a very strange adventure happened to me. I arrived late in the evening, on my journey from Colchester, and, after having inquired for the best inn, was recom mended to the White Horse, which was at the other end of the town, facing the market, and adjoining to the churchyard. In the morning I was desi rous of seei the church - a lon large, and stately edifice, and then just finished. Ter I had surveyed t e building I walked among the tombs in the churchyard, and the sexton was then digging a grave for a burial, which was to be made of a townsman that evening. I stood awhile to observe the man, who, without the least compunction or re ection, cast out from the earth the remains of his fellow-mortals, and whistled with indifference.
