Il entre ensuite � l'�cole normale sup�rieure en 1848 et est re�u premier � l'agr�gation de lettres de 1851 Il est nomm� en 1851 membre de l'�cole fran�aise d'Ath�nes et s�journe deux ans en Gr�ce en compagnie de l'architecte Charles Garnier et du peintre Paul-Alfred de Curzon. Il s�journe en �gypte en 1867-1868. Il participe aussi au voyage inaugural de l'Orient-Express en 1883. Agac� par les outrances du philhell�nisme alors � la mode et marqu� par le mishell�nisme de ses ma�tres du petit s�minaire, il tire de chacun de ses voyages des ouvrages satiriques marquants. La Gr�ce contemporaine (1854) remporte un grand succ�s tout en insistant sur l'�cart entre le mythe grec fond� sur l'Antiquit� et la r�alit� contemporaine. Le Roi des montagnes ridiculise le mythe romantique du pallikare, guerrier-bandit h�ros de la guerre d'ind�pendance grecque. Le Fellah d�crit comment un paysan �gyptien �lev� en Europe devient une personnalit� dans son pays et finit par �pouser une Anglaise, fascin�e par l'exotisme. De Pontoise � Stamboul parodie le c�l�bre Itin�raire de Paris � J�rusalem de Chateaubriand. Edmond About est �galement un critique d'art acerbe, tr�s dispos� � railler les peintres d'avant-garde. Ses comptes rendus de Salon en 1855 et 1857, d'une savoureuse verve comique, �reintent notamment les pr�tentions du r�alisme de Gustave Courbet et appellent � la prudence face � ce qu'il consid�re comme une br�che ouverte � l'anarchie dans l'art. R�sum� En 1859, Renault revient � Fontainebleau apr�s 3 ans d'ing�nieur de mine en Russie. Il ram�ne le colonel Fougas que le Professeur Meiser a dess�ch� en 1813 et il lui arrache un bout d'oreille. Le Professeur lui fait prendre un bain sp�cial, il ressuscite et a toujours 24 ans. Il va voir Napol�on III � Paris. Puis il va voir son fils et ses petits enfants � Nancy.
