There is no explicit violence or sex in this book, but the atmosphere created by the author is sufficiently chilling without. Perhaps hidden horrors affect us more, since our imaginations do the work. I first read this book many years ago when I was much younger (perhaps too young) and it gave me nightmares afterwards. I have, fortunately, not had nightmares since re-reading it, but it still gave spooky pleasure.
