Em A M�o e a Luva, a hist�ria transcorre em Botafogo, ent�o um simples arrabalde (o que hoje chamar�amos de sub�rbio) repleto de apraz�veis ch�caras. Machado de Assis conta-nos uma "hist�ria de amor", ou seja, a hist�ria de uma mulher de personalidade forte, Guiomar, que � assediada por tr�s pretendentes a marido. A obra enquadra-se na fase "rom�ntica" do autor, mas em vez dos recursos cl�ssicos do romantismo - enredos rocambolescos, plenos de coincid�ncias, reviravoltas, surpresas, suspenses - Machado de Assis, como j� ocorrera no romance de estreia, Ressurrei��o, prefere um texto contido, minimalista em termos de trama, de an�lise psicol�gica, mas com uma enorme eleg�ncia estil�stica, que continuaria aperfei�oando at� atingir seus p�ncaros na chamada "fase realista".
