Clever and Fun
I picked up this slim volume after being extremely impressed by Barnes' "Arthur & George." "Flaubert's Parrot" is one of those books that always seems to come up in conversation, but for one reason or another I never got around to reading. Well, now I'm glad that I did. In a lesser author's hands, this meditation of Flaubert, art, life and literature could have ended up reading like unbearably pretentious drivel, but Barnes is a true master. The book left me hungry for more Barnes and I think I might even go back and re-read Madame Bovary.
