this book kicks off the series that durant devoted his life too. it's one of the best summarizations of far east and middle eastern history that i've come across. don't be shortsighted by the title, however as durant starts us well before these ancient civilisations and describes our heritage well before egypt, mesopotamia, mohen-jo daro, etc. a true classic, yet again by a man, who most deservingly was awarded america's highest civil honor, the 'medal of freedom'
