Lou Dobbs, host of the popular program on the Fox Business Network, is one of the most astute commentators on social and political issues today. In this volume, he identifies the problems the United States is facing and shows the way forward. He begins with a focus on the values necessary for a free and prosperous society: "thrift, efficiency, faith, community, ingenuity, straight talk, honesty, industriousness - all values that once defined us and the American way."
While critical of most of the initiatives of the Obama Administration, Dobbs is not afraid to go after Republicans who are part of the problem in Washington. For example, he talks about the strategies of the past several presidential campaigns: "Like the McCain campaign before it, and the Bush presidency before that, the Romney team decided that the way to win the election was to divide the electorate . . . Republicans never used to think like that. Ronald Reagan didn't."
There will be points or issues on which various groups, whether independents, Republicans, or Democrats who are concerned about the tremendous concentration of power in Washington, will beg to differ with Mr. Dobbs. It may be social issues, such as abortion, tax or fiscal policy, or foreign affairs. But overall, if the GOP takes to heart the blueprint Mr. Dobbs has provided, electoral success in 2014, 2016, and beyond is much more probable than with the lackluster presidential campaigns of the past number of years. After all, the success of the Tea Party in 2010 shares many of the same principles that Upheaval champions.
Hopefully Upheaval will have a wide readership, especially among candidates seeking office this fall. If I could only recommend one book to this group, it would be this excellent offering by Mr. Dobbs.
