Esta obra foi fruto de anos de pesquisa e analisa a evolu��o da compreens�o dos Papas Jo�o Paulo II e Bento XVI sobre os Movimentos eclesiais contempor�neos e as Comunidades Novas, desde o S�nodo dos Bispos de 1987 (que marcou um novo impulso p�s-Vaticano II dos leigos na Igreja) at� o II Encontro de Estudo dos bispos (2008), abrangendo as principais interven��es destes pont�fices at� este �limo grande encontro realizado em 2008, em Roma. Para muitos estas novas realidades eclesiais s�o consideradas um dos maiores frutos concretos da primavera p�s-conciliar, o renascimento da esperan�a em uma Igreja que enfrentava grandes conflitos, em meio ao que era considerado uma esp�cie de "inverno" (Karl Rahner). Essa esperan�a foi afirmada explicitamente por Papa Jo�o Paulo II e confirmada no pontificado de Bento XVI. A retomada desse debate pode ser situada no contexto do Conc�lio Vaticano II que deu novo vigor � discuss�o sobre os carismas e a sua correta coloca��o eclesiol�gica. Tais pontificados foram extremamente relevantes para o aprofundamento do tema.Esta obra tem se tornado refer�ncia na compreens�o hist�rica deste fen�meno.
