THE ABSORBENT MIND explains Maria Montessori's acclaimed educational method, which is now commonly practiced in public and private schools everywhere. Its effectiveness has most recently been demonstrated by the results of a study which indicates that Montessori children have improved behavioral and academic skills compared with children from the mainstream school system. The authors concluded that "when strictly implemented, Montessori education fosters social and academic skills that are equal or superior to those fostered by a pool of other types of schools." The Montessori method of education has subsequently been applied successfully to children and is quite popular in many parts of the world. As a new mother I was starving for a sensible, low key approach to understand and aid my children in their journey of growth and development. This is by far, by miles, the most effective approach I have read. The child, from age 0 to 6, is essentially on Nature's "auto-pilot," requiring very little from parents except obvious basic needs and an environment that is well organized and filled with a few essential learning tools. In her own words, Dr. Maria Montessori describes how she comes to understand the child and how to let the child learn through its "inner guide" which directs the child's growth and development just as it did in utero. Amazingly insightful in it's simplicity and observations about the child.
