Yes, we have all heard of the Russian partisans who gathered together in the forests of Poland and the Ukraine, and who carried out guerilla attacks on the Nazi troops who had invaded and were devastating their countries, during World War II. This book however celebrates the group of Jewish refugees who somehow managed to escape from the murderous clutches of the German regime, and who formed their own camps, which they organised in the most difficult conditions. They set up their own workshops, they carried out what raids they could on the German invaders, and they survived. This is a story of heroism, made possible by the strong conviction of the Bielski brothers that it was their duty to save as many Jews as they could from torture and death.

Little known history of heroism
This story is significantly different from the film Defiance and, if anything, more inspiring. This book demonstrates that the best resistance was to survive.

Worth the Read
Well written... flows like a novel, yet detailed as a documentary. Outlines the people and the culture surrounding the Jewish defiance of the Nazi regime. Chronicles the largest forest forest community in Germany at the time of the Nazi invasion and includes the discipline employed by its leaders. Well worth the read!

Defiance, but yet Determined to Live
While I have not yet finished Defiance, I did see the movie and highly recommend both. With the book, it is well written with quite a bit of detail, but not enough to get bogged down in. The author makes you feel as if you are there in person, and that the people within are just that, real people, and not just names on a page, and for me, that is always a seller, (and which goes to compliment the author in her writing ability)! With the more I read, as this is another place/time than the attic of Anne Frank, or the Warsaw Ghetto, etc., the Jews know how to mobilize with everyone doing what they can do best, or even just what needs done. No service, or avenue of learning, is done without, which is not only admirable, but awesome considering the handicaps of the circumstances! How much we can learn from those who have experienced hardship!
