Science fiction books must be a pleasure to read even if they are not funny.
The particular one was good. The idea that is based on, is original and intruiging. The first "earth" part is exceptional, mixing sci-fi with every day life, children's thoughts, problems and emotions, making it realistic and believable.
The second part is problematic, since this balance is missing. It would be easy to excuse, since it is the "space" part, put i had the constant feeling that an unsucceesful editing took place. The smart ideas were there but somehow the writer choses to ignore them. The events and situations are not dramatic enough to justify their appearence or, if they are, they are not developed into an integral part of the narration - story, giving the impression that they could be replaced easily with something else and it would not make any difference.
This fact, somehow, weakenss the clever solution of the story and leaves a bittersweet feeling to the reader.
