Overall, ""Among the Himalayas"" is a fascinating account of one man's journey through one of the world's most awe-inspiring regions, offering readers a glimpse into the unique and diverse cultures that call the Himalayas home.1899. An account of the author's travels in the 1890s in India and Sikkim, including sections on the Nepal and Tibet borders. As the author explains: During the past fourteen years I have traversed portions of the borderlands of Sikkim nearly every year, sketching, shooting, collecting, and especially exploring the customs of the people on the frontiers of Tibet, and of Nepal. This illustrated narrative of my journeyings I hope may reflect, in some measure, the keen enjoyment of travel in these regions, may awaken further interest in a fascinating though little known land, may assist in guiding the traveler to those features that are of greatest general interest, and bring home to the reader a whiff of the bracing breezes of the Himalayas. A factual travelogue that's as gripping as a novel. Waddell's work and genius deserves to be better known to modern readers. He is a scholar and polymath who has much to teach. This work brings the scenery and people to life as if we are there beside the author every step of the way. It is so vivid, I was getting vertigo from imagining some of the sheer drops he describes. It is almost as good as being there.
