Mannlicher probably should be rated as the greatest gun designer of all time; why ?. He is credited with the greatest number of gun patents ever assigned to a single name. Although a European; the major point of interest for American enthusiasts is the number of American designers who have clearly been inspired by this man's work. Primarily known for the 'straight pull bolt action rifle' , Mannlicher was way ahead of his time and dabbled in automatic weapon design in the days when the ammunition was not suitable. It was left to later designers such as Marshall Williams , Garand and Browning to make his designs work. Don't just take my word for it; read this book.
