Wow! A fabulous book documenting John Muir's first two expeditions to Alaska. A rare account of John Muir in his beloved wilds from the perspective of a companion. Young documents the logistics of these expeditions more than Muir did, and also presents stories that Muir left out of his 'Travels in Alaska'.
Young's description of the calving face of Dawes (Young) Glacier at the head of Endicott Arm, with Muir and Stikine applauding and barking from an adjacent mountain face, is easily one of the best written depictions of the dynamism and beauty of glaciers.
