Kate Winthrop is a highschool senior who is content with her life. She is calm, intelligent, quite and collected. She is overshadowed by her older sister, Melissa, who in highschool was the junior class president dated all the popular boys, and is running for the president of her sorority at the beginning of the book. Kate's mother would also like Kate to be more popular and become friends with the most popular girl at Millbank High, Gretchen Tanner.
The story begins when Kate is invited to a party at school by Gretchen, which later turns out to be a hoax. As she leaves, they all murmur "seventy-one? What was she doing here?" Kate, crushed, runs home. When she gets to her house and opens up her email, she sees an IM from someone called Mike Milken who tells her about "The Market".
The Market is based on the real stock market, except this stock market ranks the senior class of girls by looks, brains, how much money they have, and their connections. There are 140 girls in the senior class, and Kate discovers she is a bleak seventy-one. Being seventy-one, she is ranked as a Junk Bond which is valued at $1.75 a share.
Kate shows the market to her (only) friends, Dev and Callie. They come up with a plan to beat the Market. Invest money in Kate's stock, make her popular, and get rich quick. And they do that, but there's more than that. Who is behind the "Market" and why create something like this? And now that Kate's popular, why should she still hang out with Dev and Callie? And more importantly, what's that girl Gretchen Tanner up too?
The Market is a great book for teens, and a must read for those who enjoy mystery and realistic books. The plot is well played out and the dialogue and writing style is up to par with some of the greatest.
