Because of her father's irresponsible gambling habits, Sophia MacFarlane has just lost her house and the diamonds she inherited from her deceased mother to Dougal MacLean. Determined to regain ownership, Sophia pulls out all the stops. First, she sends her father away temporarily, so she can disguise her identity and claim that she also won the house in a gambling wager. Next, she sets about un- polishing the manor, putting damp sheets on the bed, and dusting the walls with ash. When Dougal arrives, he is not only shocked at the estate's ramshackle appearance; he is also stunned by the beauty of Sophia, who seduces Dougal into a game of high stakes. If she beats him at a game of Chance, she gets the house. If she loses, he gets.... her "virtue." And when their game ends, Dougal and Sophia discover that they've also been gambling on love.

I liked this story in that it is not typical period romance piece. Usually there is a damsel in distress (okay she IS distressed) and danger and a warrior that saves her or has kidnapped her only to fall for her; OR a warrior is injured, in a dungeon and a damsel saves him - then they flee all sorts of danger while they fall for each other. In this story - unique plot is refreshing. A man gambles away the deed to his property and his daughter is determined to gain the property back. Hence, she sets about deeds to thwart interest in the property when the new owner comes to view it. Her plan is uncovered early in the story when overheard. BUT, the gent knows not the why. He plays along trying to get the gist of the game. If she cannot deter him with the property itself she is bent to win it back in a game of chance. They spar each trying to outdo the other and gain for themselves. Of course, while falling for each other. He has a curse on him and is one in a series about the MacLean family and their curses. I will read the others. This is Dougals part in the series. They play she wins but loses him. Was it worth it? He leaves - she is not happy as she has learned what makes a home is not necessarily property. He is determined to stay away as he caught her cheating at cards (but not when winning the home back - although he does not know that) and finds he could care for her but refuses to as his temper forces his curse to the fore and he will not let that control go after the last time it manifested so badly. She comes to him and there is a small twist that happens - he now plays her to keep her around like she did him at the property. Read to find out how the twist ends. Also how they rectify their ability or inability to not con each other. Good book - I will pick up the rest in the series by this author.
