Randolph Jefferson "Soapy" Smith and his group of con artists were driven out of Denver. It was only a temporary setback as the mining town of Creede was even more ideal. The vice and con games in the town are dominated by camp boss Bob Ford and his gang. Ford spends much of his time behind closed doors. As the man who shot Jesse James, he has more than his share of enemies. Ford has a hammerlock on Creede, relieving miners of their gold by a number of devices the town council can do nothing to stop. Nothing, that is, until "Soapy" Smith arrives and offers them an alternative. Bat Masterton works as a bouncer for Bob Ford, but he is an old acquaintance of Smith's and expresses his willingness to move into law enforcement in Creede.
