Edgar Award-nominee Author This year's annual cricket match between the Comedians and the Writers, held in the outer London borough of Cowden, is a little more eventful than usual when Bruce Lester, an accountant and collector of comedy ephemera, is murdered with a baseball bat shortly after coming off the field. Aided by DC Frank Mitchell, Detective Inspector Don Packham interrogates his suspects - an Irish comedian, his assistant and head of his fan club, the dead man's widow, Jerry Marsh, an American and prime suspect given the inappropriate murder weapon, a policeman with an excellent comedy name, the editor of a comedy fanzine, a gag writer known for his fiery temper, and a freelance studio manager whose mission as a comedy fan is tracking down, preserving and renovating old comedy recordings. The cricket match, Don is sure, is just a side issue. What all these people have in common is their involvement in comedy. In the course of their investigation, Packham and Mitchell are going to find out more than they ever wanted to know about the strange subculture of organized comedy fandom.
