Prout was THE great master musical theorist and teacher of the late 19th century English speaking countries and one of the few in the English language who wrote books of lasting value on Music Theory and Composition. His knowledge of Music was Encyclopedic. He himself was also a composer but his works are seldom if ever heard today.
While his other writings have stood the test and still usable today ,even though dated for the 20th and 21st century, of time even those of esoteric areas such as the Fuge construction. Compared to all his other works.literary writings --this book is a great disappointment except for maybe someone who is an absolute novice and never heard a Beethoven Symphony. Prout seems to have abrogated his sapient quality with this one work of which there are many others in the English language that are just as good or even better.
