Haggard served as assistant to various diplomats in Africa in his early years and did not embark on his writing career until the 1880s by which time he had returned to England. His African experiences were a great influence on his writing and he achieved his first success with King Solomon's Mines in 1885 which was soon followed by its sequel Allan Quatermain, and She and its sequel Ayesha, all swashbuckling adventure novels set in the context of the Scramble for Africa (although the action in Ayesha takes place in Thibet). She is generarlly considered to be one of the classics of imaginative literature and is one of the best-selling books of all time. It has been adapted for film several times, as have many other of his books. This work first published in 1923 is the final volume in the She/Ayesha series, subtitled The Life and Love Story of She-Who-Must-be-Obeyed.
