I chose this for my book group and we all found it charming, and tender, and we love McCall Smith's writing. We found the details of British life prior to and during the war interesting, and we enjoyed the themes of friendship and music as powerful forces in a community. Some found it a bit slow getting into, and some felt the plot didn't move smoothly, but all were glad they read it.
