With over eight million copies in print world wide, Achebe's work is a definitive novel in African literature. Filled with powerful language and finely drawn characters, Things Fall Apart also shimmers with the sounds and sights of village life. Okonkwo is born into poverty, with a wastrel for a father. Driven by ambition, he works tirelessly to gain the prosperity of many fields and wives and prestige in his village. But he is harsh as well as diligent. As he sees the traditions of his people eroded by white missionaries and government officials, he lashes out in anger. Things Fall Apart traces the growing friction between village leaders and Europeans determined to save the heathen souls of Africa. But its hero, a noble man who is driven by destructive forces, speaks a universal tongue.
This classic of African literature has a plain, straightforward writing style and an episodic plot. How much you enjoy it will depend on what kind of reader you are:
Do you like Hemingway? Then the plain style will probably appeal to you, and this could be an interesting completement to Papa's African stories.
Do you like late Henry James? Are you someone who likes long, elaborate sentences with a focus on the interior life of characters? Then this may not be the book for you.

Things Falll Apart
This book is a brilliant read, and tells of life in African society before Europeans arrived to destroy life as Africans knew it!!!

Great book! Great price!
The price couldn't be better (mine was 99 cents) for a book that was required reading for my LIT class. The book itself was engaging and interesting. I was thrilled that it was easy to read and kept my interest.
