The dark and the light
The Colony is the well-written account of the dark and the light of human nature. Hansen's Disease (leprosy) is a classic symbol of all that sacrifices the human person to fear, isolation, and desperate suffering. The history of America's leper colony on Molokai draws us inside that experience, re-creating the persons and the natural setting of what is both reality and symbol. The disease is hard to contract, but the genetic predisposition on which it builds is endemic to the Hawaian peoples. This account sheds expert light on these discards of society and those who loved them enough to share and to rescue.
