Refreshing Non-Fiction
With a narrator as vivacious and relatable as Debbie, there's no way you can go wrong. Moving at a lightening fast speed, Kabul Beauty School is equal parts horrifying and inspiring. A fresh, heroic look at Afghanistan, it offers up touching stories and an excellent read. Definitely recommended!

Behind the Walls
Kabul Beauty School is a non-fiction account of one woman's adventures in post-Taliban Kabul. Deborah Rodrigues sets off from Michigan on a humanitarian mission to Afghanistan only to find herself a duckling among swans -- a hairdresser on a medical team. Feeling excluded and bored. she wanders through the markets and shops of Kabul, making friends and developing an understanding of Afghani life. The Kabul Beauty School grows out of her experiences. What begins with calls to beauty suppliers around the United Stated seeking donations and culminates with a school giving Afghani woman a way to earn an income and perhaps even more importantly a newfound confidence in their worth and their abilities. This book provides a window on the rich and colorful culture that survived beyond the pockmarked concrete walls and dusty streets of Afghanistan. It's also a great story.
