the book gets you into the minds of people living at that time. it is especially relevant for african-americans because times have changed so much that we have to be aware and have a historical understanding of the undercurrent of racism lying just below the surface of white americans societal politeness, but whose ugliness has risen like a gyser with the election of our black president.
