Elles ont mis au n�ant les hypoth�ses de Kircher, de Perizonius et d'autres, auxquelles Martini, Ferkel et Burney ont accord� trop de confiance. D'autre part, les Arabes, �tant de m�me race que ces peuples s�mitiques et parlant une langue analogue aux leurs, ont une musique dont le syst�me n'est bien connu que gr�ce � des travaux r�cents. Enfin, dans l'est de l'asie se trouvaient les Ary�s ou Ariens, qui peupl�rent la Perse et l'inde, puis l'asie Mineure, la Gr�ce et l'europe, et dont il n'est pas fait mention dans les �crits des savants qui viennent d'�tre nomm�s. Cependant, si l'histoire de la musique dans l'antiquit� ne commence pas par celle de ces peuples primitifs, il ne peut y avoir qu'in certitude en ce qui concerne le m�me art chez les Grecs. On voit donc combien �tait pr�matur�e l'entreprise d'une histoire de la musique des temps anciens, avant qu'on en e�t recueilli les pre miers mat�riaux.
