Sein Vater war ein irl�ndischer Milit�rarzt in der englischen Armee, seine Mutter eine Griechin aus vornehmer Familie: zwei Rassen, zwei Nationen, zwei Religionen durchdrangen sich in dem Kinde und bereiteten fr�h jenes starke Welt b�rgertum vor, das ihn bef�higen sollte, sich einstdie Wahlheimat statt der wirklichen zu schaffen. Europa und Amerika sind dem Knaben nicht freund. Den Sechsj�hrigen bringen die Eltern nach England, wo das Ungl�ck ihn ungeduldig erwartet, um ihm dann viele Jahre treu zu bleiben. Seine Mutter, frierend in der kalten, grauen Welt nach ihrer wei�en Hei mat, entieht ihrem Gemahl, der kleine Lafcadio bleibt allein und wird in ein College gesteckt. Dort trifft ihn das zweite Ungl�ck, beim Spiel mit Kame raden das eine Auge zu verlieren, und um das Ma� seiner fr�hen Leiden voll zu machen: die Familie verarmt und Hearn wird unbarmherzig, noch ehe er seine Studien ann�hernd beendigen konnte, in die Welt hinausgesto�en.
