In the Library of the Royal Irish Academy and of Trinity College, Dublin, With a Translation, and Copious Notes Before concluding these preliminary remarks, it will be necessary to give some account of the antiquaries by whom these Annals were compiled, and who'are now known as the four masters, although it is evident they never themselves assumed the name. That title was first given them by Colgan, who explains his reasons for so doing, in the preface to his Acta Sanctorum, to be presently cited; to which we may add, that Quatuor hiayistri had been long previously applied by the medical writers of the middle ages to the four masters of the medical sciences, and that this circumstance probably suggested to Colgan the appellation he has given to the compilers of these Annals.
