The early work of most writers -the great Dryden, for example - is usually inferior, because of the dire necessity they are under of getting into print - and so into money - as quickly as possible. It is useless to surmise now as to what killed Step-hen Crane at so early an age - 30. He was delicate and fragile, physically, and it may have been the stress and storm of his early struggles for literary recognition - or it may have been his hardships and shipwreck in the Cuban campaign as war-correspondent.
