Die Wirklichkeit ist in der Kunst wie in der Natur voll von Widerspr�chen. Aber die Theorie muss sich von solchen \viderspruchen frei halten und den Gesetzen der Logik folgen. Gattung gegen Gattung stellen ist ein logischer Prozess. Von der Poesie die genaueste Beobachtung des Rhythmus selbst auf Kosten des Wortaccentes fordern und umgekehrt von der Musik die strengste Beobachtung der nat�rlichen Betonung, das ist verkehrt; denn die Hauptsache bleibt in der Poesie immer der Sinn, in der Musik der Rhythmus. Wenn aber hier rhythmisch-musikalische und metrische Anforderungen mit einander in Gegensatz gebracht werden, so ist dabei wohl zu beachten, dass z. B. Die Komposition eines dichterischen Textes nicht allein der Musik sondern auch der Poesie angeh�rt. In der Musik sind die T�ne Selbstzweck, in der Dichtung nur Mittel, denn der Haupt zweck ist hier der Sinn. Nur in der Musik haben wir den reinen Rhythmus, in der Dichtung den angewandten. Aber nur die Instrumentalmusik, nicht der Gesang, stellen uns diesen reinen, nicht angewandten Rhythmus vor. Weit besser als in Noten fur das Auge setzt man sich darum die Schemata unserer Verse gleich f�r das Ohr um, indem man sie sich vokalisierend versagt oder indem man sie auf dem Klavier anschlagt; so allein wird man den rhythmischen Charakter der Versarten rein erkennen. Wenn aber auch jeder komponierte Text ein metrisches Element enth�lt, so ist er doch f�r die Metrik nur in so weit zu brauchen, als er den in dem Rhythmi zomenon enthaltenen nat�rlichen Rhythmus wirklich zu Geh�r bringt und nicht etwa einen vollkommeneren an die Stelle setzt.
