Excerpt from Deer Park and Oakland: Twins of the Alleghanies When the sagacious and prescient minds that control the great railway corporation determined to create in the tonic and translucent atmosphere, three thousand feet above the level of the sea, an ideal Summer Home, to which the public should be bidden, they bent to their work with energy and lavishness. All the resources and judgment acquired by architects, builders, decorators, and sanitary engineers were freely enlisted in the formulation and accomplishment Of plans that should carry the names of the twin resorts with honor throughout the land. It would have been the common error of a false and mere tricious taste to seek to overlay the simple and unadorn able grandeur Of these mountain wilds with tawdry devices, but a correct and generous appreciation of the value of the surroundings dominated the scheme upon which deer park and oakland were established, and, as a consequence, we have two retreats that are unique in the United States. There is nothing else like them; andthere can be nothing else like them in those features which conduce to the perfect restoration of mental and physical robustness, the supreme peace, the salutary enjoyment, the days of luxurious ease, or (as one chooses) Of invigorat ing exercise, the associations Of cultured and genial society, the nights of unbroken and profound rest - all the medi cines Outside the pharmacopoeia that build up a strong and exuberant vitality and go to solve in the affirmative the problem whether life is worth living. In the system which rules upon the crest of the Alleghanies, the happy medium is attained between the noisy and incessant whirl of certain resorts that merely transfer the routine Of the city to the country and the discomforts and desolation of existence in humbler refuges in which people have tried to persuade themselves that they were recreating, because their beds were hard, their rooms untidy, their steak burned, and their biscuits underdone. There is comfort, elegance, luxury, on the great eastern divide but from the stately hotels and dainty cottages one plunges into the primitive forests, or ascends to the eternal crags, and leaves the world behind.
