Excerpt from A Treatise on Appendicitis In presenting a second edition of this book I have endeavored to bring the subject of the inflammatory lesions of the vermiform appendix up to the present state of knowledge. Professional interest in these lesions has not diminished, but rather increased, since the publication of the first edition. This circumstance, to gether with the fact that the latter has been so favorably received, decided me to comply with the request of the publishers to furnish the material for a second edition. It will be noted that much of the book has been rewritten, \several chapters recast, and two new chapters added. In my experience with the operative treatment of these lesions, I have been struck with the difficulties attending the differential diagnosis even by physicians of acknowledged ability and repute. I have endeavored, in one of the new chapters, to so systematize available knowledge of lesions likely to be mistaken for appendicitis as to assist the practitioner at arriving at a conclusion in doubtful cases in as early a stage of the disease as possible, in order that prompt operative interference may be instituted at a time when the best results may be looked for. Realizing the fact that, in the very nature of things, some cases of appendicitis must of necessity receive non-operative treat ment at some stage of the disease, and that occasionally cases must be treated during their entire course by so-called medical methods, a chapter has been devoted to this phase of the subject.
