Excerpt from The Revolt of the Horses The very highest intellectual and moral attributes belong, however, to only one class of Houyhnhnms. We do not find among them the infinite variety of breed and size which prevails among our horses, the result of indiscriminate crossing, of different climates, and, above all, of the different treatment they receive at our hands. They only know three sharply distinguished types, which, for want of better terms, though they are somewhat mislead ing we may call the royal, the aristrocratic, and the working classes. These are outwardly dis tinguished from one another by colour; the first two being bay, chestnut, or black, and the third white, sorrel, and iron-grey the two higher classes are poorly represented by our thoroughbreds, and the last by our heavier hunters, carriage, and farm horses. The former alone have those sublimer faculties of mind and soul, which transcend the loftiest human intellect, and the purest and noblest human virtue. The working Houyhnhnms possess what we call good sound sense, perfect sweetness of temper, and kindness of disposition. They find absolute contentment and delight in the interchange of mutual good offices with their equals, and in trustful loving obedience to the higher wisdom of the superior castes.
