Excerpt from Memoir of John Nichol: Professor of English Literature in the University of Glasgow IT has fallen to me, as senior literary executor of the late Professor Nichol, to write his Memoir, bringing into it the story of his academic career, and his work as a man of letters. In the collection and arrangement of biographical material I have been greatly indebted to Mr. Pringle Nichol, who has sent me the very interesting record of his father's early years, written in the year 1861, and called Leaves from my Life. This chapter, the work of Nichol's young manhood, seems to me to be almost unique in modern autobiography. His son has also supplied me with a narrative of events in his father's life while a student at Glasgow, and with various facts as to the movements of the Nichol household after they settled in Glasgow, as well as Of their last years in London. He has sent me a chronicle of some vacation rambles, with many interesting letters, and an account of the closing days. Most Of the last section of Chapter XI. Was originally written by him. I am also greatly indebted for facts, letters, and suggestions to Professor Nichol's Sister, Mrs. Jack, IO The College, Glasgow.
