Excerpt from Pomander Walk: A Comedy in Three Acts At the rise of the curtain sir peter antro bus, a genial but plethoric old admiral with a patch over one eye, and mr. Brooke-hoskyn, a ponderous, slow - moving person, with a rumbl ing bass voice, both in their shirt-sleeves, have just finished a game of quoits. Basil pringle, slightly hunch-backed, pale-faced, with soulful eyes, is seated at an open window of Number Four, (upstairs), practising a passage in the slow movement of the kreutzer sonata on the violin, and repeating it over and over again, shaking his head with evident dissatisfaction. Miss ruth pennymint, thin and forty, is seated at the open downstair window of the same house. The eyesore, a nondescript creature, clad in a long garment with bulging pockets, somewhat resembling a smock frock, and in a terrible old rough-haired top hat, is fishing from the upper end of the Walk. Presently mrs. Poskett, forty and buxom, comes out of Number Two, carrying a large and lovely sandy-haired cat in her arms, which she puts down in her front garden, out of sight. Then she basics herself in her little garden. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ...
