This was a great triumph for so young a man to be elected over a veteran in the service of the country. Judge Smith was a Radical, and in favor of Wm. H. Crawford for President. Gen'l. Hayne was an anti-radical, and opposed to Mr. Craw ford. These were then Mr. Calhoun's political views. My purpose is not to follow Gen. Hayne through his success in Congress. He discharged his duties as Senator with his characteristic energy and ability. He was the Chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs, and so discharged the duties that he was, on the election of General Jackson to the Presidency, favorably spoken of for the office Of Secretary of the Navy. In the Senate he was the leading antagonist to the Tariff, and fairly competed with Webster on that question. In January, 1832, in Opposition to a resolution offered by Mr. Clay, Gen.
